• I would like to commission a painting or drawing. What is my first step?
Choose some photos of the subject you would like to have painted and send an email to rachel@heleneamram.com with your idea for the portrait. If possible, please specify the purpose of the gift (ex: a personal/private gift, a corporate gift, a memorial tribute, etc) and attach a few JPGs of the subject. If you already have dimensions in mind (ex: 12” x 16”), please include these in your email. The artist will send you a free quote as well as a proposal of various sizes and prices.
• Do you work from photos or real life?
For the convenience of the client, paintings and drawings are done from photographs. Photos can be provided by the client or can also be taken by the artist at the client’s request (if the client is located in the Greater Toronto area in Southern Ontario or, on occasion, in Montreal, QC).
• Can I email images or provide printed material?
Yes, please email JPG images or share a link to an online photo album (ex: on Facebook, Flickr) of specific images that the artist may choose from) to: rachel@heleneamram.com
Printed photographs are also welcome. Any printed material provided by the client will be returned with the finished artwork.
• What size can the portrait be?
Request the size that you would like in inches or centimeters, or ask the artist to suggest some sizes.
• How is the portrait painted or drawn? On what kind of surface? What kind of paint will you use?
Paintings - Using a photo as a visual reference, the artist does a drawing on canvas. She then paints over the drawing in acrylic or oil paint.
Drawings - The artist uses the photograph to draw on acid-free paper. Drawings can be done on a white or coloured paper in pencil, charcoal, dry pastel or any other media the client and artist agree upon.
• I would like two subjects in one painting (or drawing). Can you work from two separate photos and combine them?
Yes, depending on the quality of the photos. Prices may vary according to how many subjects/people are in the portrait.
• How long will it take to complete the portrait?
Between three weeks and two months, depending on the size and complexity of the portrait.
• How much will the portrait cost? Can you please send me a quote?
Prices are determined according to size and number of subjects/people in the painting. After the client and artist have determined these specifications, the artist will send the client a free quote. Prices are in Canadian dollars.
• When do I pay for the portrait? How do I pay?
Once the artist and client have agreed on the dimensions and price of the portrait as specified in the artist-client contract, the artist requests a payment of 40% of the total cost to be paid up front. This payment is proof of the contract between the artist and the client. The client will pay the balance of the total cost once the portrait is completed and a jpg of it has been sent to the client. Payment of the balance must be made to the artist before the portrait is delivered to the client. All payments are made through PayPal or Interac money transfer via email.
• How will the portrait be sent to me?
Shipping will be arranged by the artist via Canada Post or FedEx depending on the size of the artwork. The artwork will be packaged and protected carefully by the artist. The client must pay for national and international shipping charges.
• Can I use the portrait for my business, or make prints of it for friends and family?
The artist retains the reproduction rights on all original artwork. Written permission must be obtained from the artist for any reproduction of the artist’s work. The client holds the copyright on the photos they provide to the artist for her to work from. The artist retains the copyright on the artwork created from that image, unless otherwise negotiated and mutually agreed upon by both parties.
