ARTIST'S STATEMENT
Rachel Hélène Amram’s paintings explore a relationship between representation and abstraction, focusing on the meditative qualities of her subjects while referencing traditions of portraiture and landscape in art. Her realistic portraits evoke the emotional qualities of her subjects while her semi-abstract landscapes tease out the viewer’s experience through their layered surfaces. With her latest series, SEASCAPES, she explores the fleeting quality of light and temporal impressions of colour of the sea and sky. These colourful, fragmented compositions are snapshots of peripheral vision and memory, both a physical distillation of the seascape at different times of the day, as well as a portrayal of an open, peaceful space, symbolic of stillness, of silence.
